Yeah, So I Just Remembered…

something that really pissed me off. My memory was triggered by this week’s episode of one of my favorite podcasts, The Read.

So I used to keep in touch with a bunch of women who lived on my freshman hall. About 6 years ago, one of the women had a death in her family. One of the other ladies from my hall sent an email around asking the rest of us if we wanted to chip in to get flowers to send to the funeral.

I, of course, was happy to chip in. Cut to my grandmother passing away. I told the woman who lost a family member about my grandmother’s passing and that I wouldn’t be attending a get-together those of us who lived on the hall were having to catch up with one another. She responded with the cliché “I’m sorry for your loss” and kept it moving.

No “I’m here for you if you need me because I know how you feel,” no phone calls or texts to check on me and she damn sure didn’t send out an email to ask the ladies if they wanted to chip in to buy me flowers. In fact, not one of the people I was “friends” with at the time of my grandmother’s death sent flowers to her funeral or me. I didn’t get any sympathy cards from them either. But I guess people my age don’t really do that…

So in case you’re wondering why I don’t give a fuck about most people, it’s because most people only give a fuck about themselves and that doesn’t work for me anymore .
