Today, I’m also going to talk about people we already know are Black: the Black women of the Black Panther Party. At its height, 70% of the members of the Black Panther Party were women, something not often talked about in the media. Black women, with a median age of 19, checked on the elderly members of the community, ran the adult literacy program and ran the breakfast program feeding children. Black women are truly the backbone of the Black community and this country. Listen to this episode of “The Bay” to find out more about the women of the Black Panther Party and listen to two of its former members: Ericka Huggins, pictured here, and Rev. Cheryl Dawson.
